The Long Island

One of the major design trends for 2019 is the extra-long kitchen island, or an island which extends at a different level to become a dining or seating area, or has a cantilever to accommodate stools beneath for a more informal effect. As more homes are being extended, there is extra space to create fantastic open plan kitchens with show stopping islands that have different zones: work and preparation spaces, cooking areas, cleaning and washing areas and seating areas. Beneath the worktop will be a run of cupboards and drawers to keep your work surfaces clutter-free.

Light and dark, gloss and matt - opposites attract

Over the past decade, there has been a surge in the choice of beautiful work surfaces for the kitchen, including ones that are specially created to be heat-resistant and have anti-bacterial qualities. The latest trend is for high-gloss quartz surfaces that are matched with matt or concrete effect furniture doors and drawers. In terms of colours, two tone kitchens are hugely on-trend, with darker tall units complemented by a stand-out island in a lighter shade.

Cooling Walls

Another key trend in kitchens is the cooling wall. Together with a bank of ovens, which has become a must-have in the contemporary kitchen, the cooling wall is the next big fashion in appliances. This consists of a tall larder fridge, a tall freezer and a tall wine fridge placed side by side in any configuration of your choice. The fronts of the fridge and freezer can be the same as your run of cabinets or in stainless steel for an industrial look, while the wine fridge has a UV glass front and integrated lighting to make a feature of the bottles within.
